chromium-linux with flash player. Posted by MikeL @ 2009-07-17 14:49:08 (Comments: 0)
MikeL's imageIt works now! you will need to jump through a bunch of hoops though. especially if you use x86_64 Linux.

Update2: everything just works now.

1. Download the i386 flash tarball. extract it and copy libflashplayer.so to /usr/lib/chromium-browser/plugins.
2. You'll also need to install some other packages if you are on x86_64. These are the ones I needed; ymmv.
libXt.i586 PackageKit-gtk-module.i586 (probably don't need this but I got a message about it when flash player crashed)
3. Start chromium with these options: chromium-browser --enable-extensions --enable-plugins

I'm pretty close, I think. When I load a page that uses the flash plugin, I get a message stating chromium crashed (it doesn't. probably just a subprocess) and this message in console: 75c46662-5199-db0c-33c57d6e-1d2dbf27 is dumped. problem is probably an old nightly build of chromium or something, I am using it packaged from a repo

source: http://h3g3m0n.wordpress.com/2009/07/12/linux-chrome-flash-ext/

update: it works now. ignore parts that are striked out. scrolling with pages that have flash on them is really slow, though. the slowness is proportional to the number of flash elements on the page, which really sucks. they'll probably be optimizing things eventually though, plugins are still "partially implemented"

MikeL's imagesorry.

may as well mention that i'm not going to play MMORPGs anymore because they take up enough time and it's stupid to pay for it if i'm not playing it (that warren temple guy is always so busy)

work is going well i am enjoying it and it is a good experience

I am the third Google result for 'mike lim' Posted by MikeL @ 2008-09-02 22:24:30 (Comments: 1)
MikeL's imageThat's pretty neat, yes?

In other news I picked up an Acer Aspire One subnotebook from Anitec for my sister to use for school. It was $429 and sports a 1.6ghz Intel Atom processor, 1gb of ram, and a 120gb mechanical hard drive. What surprised me about it is that it is able to run, for example, Warcraft III with a nice framerate. I wasn't expecting something that can be held in one hand like that to be able to handle that; now I want one.

But, no! I'm waiting for the pandora which is apparently coming out in November this year. Can't wait.

edit 9/14: wtf it can somehow play spore.
really.
got a new case for my desktop Posted by MikeL @ 2008-08-28 06:32:36 (Comments: 2)
MikeL's imagethis appears to have solved my video card's overheating problem somewhat.

i got a Coolermaster CM 690, and along with it a Seasonic M12 600W which was $99 because I bought a case.

this is from http://ncix.com which is local!!! for me.

and wow this case is so quiet.

(I CAN PLAY GAMES WITH 4x FSAA AND WITHOUT OVERHEATING)

MikeL's imageunlimited incoming text messages, 250 outgoing text messages, unlimited web browsing, caller id (omfg)

but is it actually useful?
we'll find out!

update:

yeah it's pretty useful but i've only sent like 8 text messages.
vi Posted by MikeL @ 2008-07-05 02:50:07 (Comments: 2)
MikeL's imageI found this rather neat javascript implementation of vi, the text editor, and have added it to this site. On my end, post adding can be done in it, and comment adding can be done in vi on your end.

Rather neat IMHO.

ram, aaugh it's so hot here, gpu woes, and allergies Posted by MikeL @ 2008-07-03 00:17:08 (Comments: 1)
MikeL's imageToday, I got 2gb of ram for my desktop, in addition to the 1gb it already has. This helps significantly to stop the stuttering when a particularly poorly written game I play sucks up 800mb of ram.
Ram is so cheap these days. It used to be sooooo expensive...

Anyway, it's really hot here.
This is bad, because my desktop's videocard (evga 7600gs AGP) runs rather hot (according to the sensor, like 70 degrees idle hot). I'm not overclocking it, and I'm using a stock cooler. In this heat it is impossible to play anything for too long because it rockets up to 85 degrees unless I drastically turn down graphical settings, at which point it becomes insanely ugly.
I'm starting to think my GPU may be defective-- will contact evga about this on the weekend.

Ventilation isn't great, but it's not THAT bad; and I think that my PSU is supplying adequate power.

Also my allergies have started to act up.
Usually I have allergies to stuff like grass, pollen, etc... so if I take over-the-counter allergy medicine before going outside I am usually fine.
However, this year, I became allergic to the contents of my house-- haven't pinpointed it exactly, but I think it's feathers. This is very bad because my comfortable bedding has feathers; if I sleep using it I wake up with a stuffed up nose and itchy eyes.

fucking great.

tf2 pyro update Posted by MikeL @ 2008-06-19 20:14:17 (Comments: 2)
MikeL's imageI am going to post about the tf2 pyro update because there is nothing of note going on in my life yay ^___^

It looks cool. I think it makes pyros a bit strong (without the flame falloff) and IMO I think it was okay before. however the air blast is NEAT. also it looks cool.

the unlockables, idk. I've barely seen them and I don't have any yet. backburner sounds pretty good, but losing the air blast is a significant tradeoff. it's nice that it's not a clear-cut better weapon, unlike the medic unlocks.
So, it finally works. Posted by MikeL @ 2008-06-14 23:18:43 (Comments: 0)
MikeL's imageI have created a very, very basic input form that adds new posts to this. obviously it is a work in progress, but the backend uses mysql now which makes it a lot easier to maintain this than using silly flatfiles.

Also I can edit posts now, and have added a checkbox that allows me to have the edit push the post to the top of the post list and update the timestamp.

laptop performance Posted by MikeL @ 2008-06-13 00:35:50 (Comments: 0)
MikeL's imageSo recently, I noticed that my laptop was being sloooooooooooow.

also every time I opened the gnome main menu, gnome-panel would take up an additional 30 or so MiB of ram (only once but it was still significant)

turns out it was my fucking icon theme.
it was an svg theme, so it was all vectory, but the odd part is the icon theme I was using previously (gnomecorsair2, check it out) is also svg and did not cause any problems.

So after that it was good, but then I was acutely aware of how quickly I ran out of ram all the time, and lamented how it would probably be so long before I could get more ram for my laptop (because I would have to go rather far out of my way to go to a store)

that was last night. turns out earlier today we ended up going to anitec (which i have never been to before) at lunch, where they just happened to have 1gb ddr2 sodimms on sale for $22.95 that day.

that is pretty convenient.

so I bought 2gb, brought it home, and installed it in my laptop. It is pretty nice having everything I want to run cached in ram. Suddenly things are fast.

Also then I became aware of intermittent freezing in firefox. That was easy to fix though, I just had to switch off the following features in preferences

  • Tell me if the site I'm visiting is a suspected attack site

  • Tell me if the site I'm visiting is a suspected forgery

Turns out those features use a poorly cached, large database, which resulted in performance degradation.

the more you know!

anyhow, everything is pretty sweet now. and fast!
I hate my laptop's shitty wireless card Posted by MikeL @ 2008-06-13 00:14:24 (Comments: 1)
MikeL's imageIt's shitty.

A couple weeks back I went to a friend's house and tried to connect to his wireless network. I had the WEP key and everything, but it still would not associate.

At first I thought it might be that I was using ndiswrapper and NetworkManager, so I rebooted into winxp. However it was still broken and remained broken despite my best attempts to fix it. Eventually I settled on another unprotected network.

Also I was at work today and saw an ad-hoc network named 'Free Internet'

so I kind of wanted to connect to that so I could use the internet on my laptop, you know, instead of it being a useless brick

didn't work on fedora or xp ^___^
