laptop performance Posted by

So recently, I noticed that my laptop was being
sloooooooooooow.
also every time I opened the gnome main menu, gnome-panel would take up an additional 30 or so MiB of ram (only once but it was still significant)
turns out it was my fucking icon theme.
it was an svg theme, so it was all vectory, but the odd part is the icon theme I was using previously (gnomecorsair2, check it out) is also svg and did not cause any problems.
So after that it was good, but then I was acutely aware of how quickly I ran out of ram all the time, and lamented how it would probably be so long before I could get more ram for my laptop (because I would have to go rather far out of my way to go to a store)
that was last night. turns out earlier today we ended up going to
anitec (which i have never been to before) at lunch, where they just happened to have 1gb ddr2 sodimms on sale for $22.95 that day.
that is pretty convenient.
so I bought 2gb, brought it home, and installed it in my laptop. It is pretty nice having everything I want to run cached in ram. Suddenly things are fast.
Also then I became aware of intermittent freezing in firefox. That was easy to fix though, I just had to switch off the following features in preferences
- Tell me if the site I'm visiting is a suspected attack site
- Tell me if the site I'm visiting is a suspected forgery
Turns out those features use a poorly cached, large database, which resulted in performance degradation.
the more you know!
anyhow, everything is pretty sweet now. and fast!
